Here's a little about me...
I've been married to Sam for 16 years, but we've been together for 21 years. Sam and I don't have kids of our own, but I seem to be everyone's "Tauntie." Two years ago, one of my former students moved in with us and I became Mama Ru. I have two gorgeous god-daughters whom I adore and a host of little cousins, nieces, and nephews with whom I get to share my life.
I'm from Paincourtville. up until two years ago, I lived next door to my mom and dad-- and my sister and her husband. We moved across the bayou and did a huge remodel in 2016, but I can get to my mom and dad's in under 3 minutes! My parents are wonderful, giving, and funny. I'm truly blessed to be so close to them (double-meaning intended).
My weekdays are typically filled with "Family Jeopardy!" grading/planning parties, after-school athletics or Student Council events, and dinners with my family and friends. Up until the flood in 2016, we would spend time at our camp in Maurepas going boating and relaxing with friends, but plans for a new camp and final remodeling details have been taking up our time.
I teach English I and English I Honors in the Freshman Academy and have taught 5th grade to college level English classes (except English II) for about 16 years, starting with a year and a half of Science so many years ago. I went on to teach Developmental English/Freshman Comp for four years at Nicholls State University. I pursued my Master's Degree in English at Southeastern, where I was the Assistant Director of the Writing Center and a Writing Consultant there, finishing my degree in 2007. It was then that I returned home to Napoleonville Middle School where I taught 8th grade English for three years. This will be my eighth year at AHS, and I think that my transition from a middle school culture to a high school culture has helped me be a better English I teacher. Freshman Academy is a wonderful place for me and for them.
In 2009, I had the pleasure to become a part of the South Louisiana Writing Project , and without a doubt, my life has changed because of it. As a Teaching Consultant, I've tried to spread the insight and passion that the writing project has bestowed upon me. I was a mentor for the 2010 fellows and for the last seven years, I've been the co-director. My times with SLWP--from the institutes, the showcases, the leadership team meetings, and the New Orleans Writing marathons-- have transformed me into a more confident teacher and a more enthusiastic writer.
I feel completely blessed to be able to walk into work every morning and know that I have found what I was meant to do with my life--my vocation. And, while teaching is something I sincerely love doing, I love learning even more. I learn so much from my students every single day, and I look forward to spending this year with them!
